Digital Economy Tax Revenue Hits IDR 32.2 Trillion
JAKARTA. As of December 31, 2024, state revenue from the digital economy sector reached IDR 32.32 trillion. This amount consists of Value Added Tax on Trade Through Electronic Systems (VAT PMSE) amounting to IDR 25.35 trillion, cryptocurrency tax of IDR 1.09 trillion, fintech (P2P lending) tax of IDR 3.03 trillion, and SIPP (Government Procurement Information System) tax of IDR 2.85 trillion.
According to a written statement from the Directorate General of Taxes (DGT), the government had appointed 211 PMSE business entities as VAT collectors by December 2024. Among them were 13 new appointments, 3 data corrections, and 1 revocation of collector status in December. Companies appointed in December 2024 included Pearson Education Limited, Travian Games GmbH, and GetYourGuide Deutschland GmbH. Meanwhile, the collector status of Hotels.com, L.P. was revoked.
Of all the appointed business entities, 174 successfully collected and remitted VAT on PMSE, totaling Rp 25.35 trillion. Director of Extension, Services, and Public Relations at DGT, Dwi Astuti, explained that this amount comprises IDR 731.4 billion remitted in 2020, IDR 3.90 trillion in 2021, IDR 5.51 trillion in 2022, IDR 6.76 trillion in 2023, and IDR 8.44 trillion in 2024.
Digital Tax Revenue Breakdown
1. Cryptocurrency Tax
Tax revenue from crypto assets reached IDR 1.09 trillion by the end of 2024. This amount came from IDR 246.45 billion in 2022, IDR 220.83 billion in 2023, and IDR 620.4 billion in 2024. The cryptocurrency tax includes IDR 510.56 billion from Income Tax Article 22 on sales transactions and IDR 577.12 billion from Domestic VAT on purchases.
2. Fintech Tax
The fintech sector contributed IDR 3.03 trillion as of December 2024. The revenue breakdown includes IDR 446.39 billion in 2022, IDR 1.11 trillion in 2023, and IDR 1.48 trillion in 2024. Fintech tax consists of IDR 816.85 billion from Income Tax Article 23 on domestic loan interest, IDR 647.86 billion from Income Tax 26 on foreign loan interest, and IDR 1.57 trillion from Domestic VAT.
3. SIPP Tax
Tax revenue from the Government Procurement Information System (SIPP) reached IDR 2.85 trillion by the end of 2024. This figure includes IDR 402.38 billion in 2022, IDR 1.12 trillion in 2023, and IDR 1.33 trillion in 2024. SIPP tax consists of IDR 191.71 billion from Income Tax and IDR 2.66 trillion from VAT.
Government Strives for Fair Digital Taxation
To create a level playing field between conventional and digital businesses, the government continues to expand the appointment of PMSE (Trade Through Electronic Systems) businesses to collect VAT. Additionally, the government remains committed to exploring new tax revenue potential from the digital economy sector, including taxes on cryptocurrency transactions, fintech, and SIPP.
