DGT Announces Mass Deactivation of Wives’ Tax Identification Numbers, Here’s the Reason
JAKARTA. The Directorate General of Taxes (DGT) has announced that it has carried out the mass deactivation of wives’ Taxpayer Identification Number (NPWP) statuses. The measure was reported to have been implemented on Sunday (25/1).
The tax authority conveyed this through posts on its social media platforms, including X and Instagram, on Friday (30/1). Therefore, the DGT urged taxpayers not to panic if they find that their NPWP status has suddenly changed.
“The DGT has conducted a mass deactivation of wives’ NPWPs whose data are recorded as dependents in the husband’s Family Unit List,” the DGT stated in its announcement, as quoted on Friday (30/1).
This step was taken to simplify family tax administration. In taxation, a family is considered a single economic unit.
Accordingly, the tax obligations of a husband and wife can be fulfilled through the head of the family, in this case the husband’s NPWP.
However, in principle, a wife may still use an NPWP independently or separately from her husband. This can be done as long as the wife carries out her tax obligations separately from her husband or has MT (electing separate taxation) status.
In addition, the use of an independent NPWP is also possible if the husband and wife have agreed on PH (separation of assets).
If there are wives whose NPWP status has been deactivated ex officio by the DGT and who wish to apply for MT or PH status, they may reactivate the NPWP status. The reactivation can be carried out through the Coretax system. (ASP/KEN)
